Orlando without the parks is a city of lakes, springs and good small restaurants, an hour from a rocket launch site and a beach. None of it needs a park ticket, and most of it costs under $20 a person. Base yourself in Winter Park or downtown Orlando, not the resort corridor, and rent a car: the springs and the Space Coast are 30 to 70 minutes' drive away.
The plan runs Thursday to Sunday, because the calendar decides it: the Winter Park farmers' market is Saturday, Lake Eola's market is Sunday, Se7en Bites opens only Thursday to Sunday and Kaya closes Mondays. Prices are from official sites, checked September 22, 2026.

Day 1 (Thursday): A spring swim, then Mills 50
Plan: be at Wekiwa Springs State Park in Apopka for its 8 a.m. opening. Every day visitor now needs a reservation, booked up to 60 days ahead at no extra fee; entry is $6 per vehicle. The water is 72F all year, there are no lifeguards, and it is about 33 minutes from downtown. Swim, walk a trail, leave by lunch.
If you would rather float, Kelly Park's Rock Springs is $5 a car but takes only 280 vehicles in the morning, and it fills fast.
Eat: Cuban sandwich at Black Bean Deli on Colonial Drive ($11). Dinner at Kaya in Mills 50, Filipino, mains $23 to $45 plus a 20% service charge; book on Resy. A nightcap at Wally's, the dive bar in business on Mills Avenue since 1954, or Hanson's Shoe Repair downtown, which needs the night's password.
Day 2 (Friday): Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach
Plan: Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex opens at 9 a.m.; from downtown it is about 46 miles and 65 minutes in free-flowing traffic on SR 528, a toll road. Admission is $77 for adults, parking $15. Take the included bus tour to the Apollo/Saturn V Center first and allow three hours; the last bus leaves 2.5 hours before the 5 p.m. close. Then drive 18 miles to Cocoa Beach. Lori Wilson Park has free parking and full-time lifeguards; city lots cost $25 a day. Order a grouper sandwich and ask what fish it is.
Day 3 (Saturday): Winter Park
Plan: start at the farmers' market in Central Park's West Meadow, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Walk the Park Avenue loop, about 2.5 miles. The Morse Museum ($8, open 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday) holds the Tiffany Chapel from the 1893 Chicago fair. The Scenic Boat Tour ($20 adults, hourly 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) runs the chain of lakes, and the Rollins Museum of Art is free. Park free on floors 1, 4 and 5 of the Park Place garage.
Eat: weekend brunch or dinner at The Ravenous Pig, a Bib Gourmand every year from 2022 to 2026, with a $24 pub burger. For one splurge, Soseki is a Michelin-starred 10-seat omakase at $342 a person, prepaid.
Day 4 (Sunday): Downtown, Lake Eola and Leu Gardens
Plan: breakfast at Se7en Bites in the Milk District (Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., no reservations). At 10 a.m. the Orlando Farmers Market opens at Lake Eola; walk the 0.9-mile loop or the longer Thornton Park walk, and take a swan boat ($15 for 30 minutes, up to five people, card only). Downtown street meters are free on Sundays. The live swans are gone: the flock was rehomed in July 2026 after avian flu.
Afternoon at Leu Gardens, 50 acres, $15 for adults, cards only, free parking; it closes at 5 p.m. through November 18, then at 4 p.m.
Eat: Hawkers on Mills Avenue for small plates, or drive to Disney Springs, which is free to enter and park, for the evening.
If it rains or you have children: swap Leu Gardens for the Orlando Science Center ($29 adults online, closed Wednesdays) or Gatorland ($34.99 adults, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, free parking), where the alligator shows run rain or shine.
November 15 to March 31: swap the spring for manatees
In winter, change day 1. Blue Spring State Park is where manatees shelter from mid-November to March; it counted a record 729 in 2023. The spring run closes to swimming from November 15 to March 31, reservations are mandatory for every visitor since July 15, 2026, and entry is $6 a car. It is about 52 minutes from downtown.
To get in the water with them, Crystal River permits guided swims with passive-observation rules. Group tours ran $70.95 to $115 a person on operators' sites, about 2 hours each way.
Other dated notes: the Morse Museum is free on Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m. from November 27 to December 18, 2026 and March 5 to April 30, 2027, and Leu Gardens is free on October 5, November 2 and December 7, 2026 and January 4, 2027. The Orlando Eye on International Drive was closed for maintenance with no reopening date.

Kennedy Space Center admission is plus tax. We could not verify the SR 528 toll, so budget for it separately, and read the rental company's toll fee terms (see getting around). Hotel parking is the hidden cost: The Alfond Inn is valet only, from $37 a day plus tax, and was $478.86 a night including taxes and fees on November 17, 2026.

Is Orlando worth visiting without theme parks?
For three or four days, yes: spring swimming at 72F, Kennedy Space Center, Winter Park's museums and a Michelin-listed restaurant scene in Mills 50 and Winter Park. You need a car.
What is there to do in Orlando besides Disney and Universal?
Wekiwa Springs and Kelly Park for swimming and tubing, Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach on the coast, the Morse Museum and Scenic Boat Tour in Winter Park, Lake Eola and Leu Gardens downtown, and Gatorland for old Florida.
Do I need a reservation for Wekiwa Springs?
Yes. Florida State Parks requires a day-use reservation for every visitor, including annual passholders, booked up to 60 days ahead. Entry is $6 per vehicle, paid online.
Where should I stay in Orlando if I'm not doing theme parks?
Winter Park or downtown Orlando. Both put you close to the restaurants, lakes and museums; downtown is about 33 minutes from Wekiwa Springs by car.
Can you swim with manatees near Orlando?
At Crystal River, about 2 hours west, on permitted guided tours from mid-November to March. At Blue Spring you watch from the boardwalk: its spring run is closed to swimming from November 15 to March 31.
