Universal Volcano Bay

Universal publishes the winter closure in three places, and on September 22, 2026 they did not agree on the reopening date:

• The theme park hours page and the 1-day ticket page: closure begins October 26, 2026, with "an updated planned reopening on or before April 1, 2027".
• The Universal Express page: seasonal closure from October 26, 2026, "with a current planned reopening on or before March 24, 2027".
• The annual pass listings: closed "Oct. 26, 2026 to Mar. 31, 2027".

All three agree on the start. The ticket calendar sold Volcano Bay admission through Sunday, October 25, 2026 and nothing after it. For spring 2027, do not book around a specific reopening day until Universal's hours calendar shows one. The hours page is the one Universal says to check for updates.

If you are visiting Orlando between late October and spring and want a water park, Aquatica was selling tickets for December 2026 and January 2027 dates. Check Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach for Disney's winter schedule, since those two alternate closures.

From 2017 to 2025, Volcano Bay ran on a wristband called TapuTapu. You tapped it at a ride to reserve a return time, swam while you waited, and also used it for lockers, interactive effects and paying for food. Universal announced in April 2025 that TapuTapu and virtual lines would end, and the system was switched off on October 1, 2025. Universal gave no reason.

The practical effect is that Volcano Bay now works like any other water park. You join the queue and wait. The time you used to spend in the wave pool while holding a virtual place is now spent standing in line, so arriving at opening matters more than it did.

The fix Universal sells is Express. On Universal's store on September 22, 2026, 1-day Volcano Bay Express started at $29.99 per person, and Express PLUS started at $59.99. Plain Express covers Honu and ika Moana, the Krakatau Aqua Coaster, Maku and Puihi round raft rides, Punga Racers and Taniwha Tubes. Express PLUS adds the body slides: Kala and Tai Nui, Ko'okiri Body Plunge, and Ohyah and Ohno.

Is it worth paying? For one adult on a weekday in late September, $29.99 is a small add-on to an $81 ticket, and it turns a queue-heavy day back into a swim-heavy one. For a family of four, even the floor price is about $120 before tax, and $240 for Express PLUS. On a quiet weekday, arriving at opening does most of the same work for free. On a busy Saturday, the lines are the reason to buy it. The free Express Unlimited that comes with some Universal hotel rooms does not help here: Universal's Express page says Express Unlimited is not valid at Volcano Bay.

The park is split into villages around the volcano. The headliners:

• Ko'okiri Body Plunge: a near-vertical, 70-degree speed slide that drops 125 feet through the volcano and passes through a pool where other guests are swimming. The ride people come to brag about.
• Krakatau Aqua Coaster: a water coaster that carries riders inside the volcano and out through a waterfall. The best ride here for mixed groups.
• Maku and Puihi: round multi-person raft rides. Universal promises "zero-gravity hang time" on Puihi before the splash at the bottom.
• Honu and ika Moana: two more multi-person raft rides.
• Kopiko Wai Winding River, the lazy river, and the Waturi wave pool.

Ride Ko'okiri and the Aqua Coaster in the first hour, when standby waits are shortest. Universal hotel guests got early entry at 9:30 a.m. on September 22, 2026, with Ko'okiri, the Aqua Coaster, Honu, ika Moana, Kala and the wave pool open. From August 24 to September 30, early entry here was 30 minutes rather than an hour.

Volcano Bay can be bought three ways:

1. 1-day ticket: $81 before tax on most dates we checked for September 22 to October 25, 2026, and $86 on Saturday, September 26. The lowest advertised adult price was $80.99; children aged 3 to 9 started at $75.99.
2. 4-park multi-day tickets: Universal's 3- to 7-day tickets with "4 Parks to Move Freely Between" include Volcano Bay alongside Epic Universe, Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. The 3-day version started at $160.67 per day before tax, against $147.33 for the same ticket without Volcano Bay. That is about $40 extra across three days, less than half the price of a separate 1-day water park ticket.
3. Annual passes: the 3-park passes include Volcano Bay; Universal notes on each that the park is closed October 26, 2026 to March 31, 2027.

On a short Universal trip, no. A day at Islands of Adventure or Epic Universe is what most people came for, and Volcano Bay's short hours mean it does not stretch into an evening.

It earns its place in three cases. You have a 4-park multi-day ticket, so it costs almost nothing extra. You are visiting in the heat of September or early October and want a slower afternoon between theme park days. Or you have children who are too small for the big coasters but love water. In all three cases, go on a weekday, arrive for opening, and plan to leave by mid-afternoon if the lines build.

Compared with Aquatica, Volcano Bay has the more dramatic setting and the Aqua Coaster. Aquatica is cheaper, has twin wave pools, and stays open through the winter. Volcano Bay has its own entrance, separate from CityWalk and the theme park gates. Drivers use the same garages as the older theme parks at 6000 Universal Boulevard, at $35 for regular parking on September 22, 2026. Universal tells Volcano Bay guests to follow signs to a dedicated section of the garage, then take a complimentary shuttle to the park entrance. Allow extra time for that.
