Disney's Blizzard Beach

Disney refurbishes each water park once a year and staggers the closures so that at least one stays open. Its FAQ promises at least one open every day except in bad weather. The 2026 pattern:

• Blizzard Beach reopened on February 15, 2026 after a winter closure, the day after Typhoon Lagoon closed.
• Both parks ran through the summer, until September 8.
• Typhoon Lagoon closed on September 9, 2026. No reopening date has been announced.

So for the rest of 2026, Blizzard Beach is your only Disney option. Disney has not published its next refurbishment window. Some fan sites guess early 2027, when Typhoon Lagoon would be back, but that is unconfirmed. If your trip is in January to March 2027, check the official calendar a few weeks ahead to see which park is open. Your ticket works at whichever one is.

For gentler time there are Cross Country Creek, a 3,000-foot lazy river, and Melt-Away Bay, a heated one-acre wave pool meant for wading rather than surfing. Toboggan Racers, Snow Stormers and Runoff Rapids have no height limit. Small children get Tike's Peak (48 inches and under) and Ski Patrol Training Camp.

One rule catches people out: jeans and wetsuits are not allowed on Slush Gusher or Summit Plummet. Pack proper swimwear if you plan to ride the big slides. Life jackets and towels are free; lockers, umbrellas and the shaded Polar Patio rentals cost extra, and Disney recommends reserving the rentals ahead.

Summit Plummet is the reason teenagers ask for this park. Disney describes it as a near-vertical drop of 12 stories, through a dark tunnel and into a wall of spray at the end of a 360-foot descent. It is a body slide, so there is no raft or tube between you and the drop. The ride itself lasts seconds. The wait is the stair climb, or the chairlift and then stairs.

If someone in your group is unsure, use Slush Gusher as the rehearsal. It is the 90-foot speed slide right beside it, with the same 48-inch limit and the same clothing rule, and it is fast without the vertical start. Ride Summit Plummet once, early, and then decide whether a second go is worth another climb. For most people once is enough.

The three big slides all need 48 inches, so a child under that line misses the park's headline rides. What is left still fills a morning. Tike's Peak is a children's area for kids 48 inches and under, and Ski Patrol Training Camp has no height limit. Teamboat Springs, the 1,200-foot raft ride, takes the whole family together at any height, and Cross Country Creek is a 3,000-foot lazy river with no minimum. The chairlift needs 32 inches.

Life jackets are free for everyone, so there is no need to bring one. Melt-Away Bay is a heated one-acre wave pool built for wading, which suits toddlers better than a surf-style pool. 1. Be at the gate before 10 a.m. Drop your bags, rent a locker and go straight up.
2. Summit Plummet first. Its line is a staircase on the mountain and it only gets longer. Take the chairlift up if your group is over 32 inches; it is part of the fun and saves the climb.
3. Slush Gusher and Downhill Double Dipper next, while the tower stairs are quiet.
4. Teamboat Springs as a group before lunch.
5. After lunch, when the sun is highest, move to Cross Country Creek and Melt-Away Bay and let the lines grow without you.

With a 5 p.m. close, most families are done by 2 or 3 p.m. anyway, which leaves time for a hotel nap and dinner at Disney Springs.

Price it against the alternatives. A theme park day was $119 to $209 on the dates we checked; a water park day is $74 for an adult. That sounds like a bargain until you remember that on a four-day ticket it replaces nothing: it is an extra day of hotel and meals on top.

The cheaper route is Park Hopper Plus. On October 10, 2026 a 1-day ticket with Park Hopper was $279 and with Park Hopper Plus $302.50; on December 28 it was $284 against $307.50. Our call by trip type:

• Four days or fewer at Disney: skip it.
• Five days or more, hot weather, teenagers: worth one morning.
• Young children only: your hotel pool may do the same job for free.
• November to February: only on a warm, sunny forecast. Melt-Away Bay is heated; the slides are not.

If you are choosing between resorts, Universal's Volcano Bay uses a virtual line system instead of stair queues, and Aquatica is SeaWorld's water park. Neither takes Disney tickets.

Food is basic and priced like a theme park. Lottawatta Lodge is the main counter, with cheeseburgers and flatbreads. Polar Pub is a beach bar with beer, wine and cocktails, and I.C. Expeditions sells sundaes, floats and waffle cones. None is worth planning around.

Weather rules the day. Disney puts full-day closures on the calendar at least a day ahead, but storms can close slides or the whole park with little warning, and lightning in the area shuts the slides.
