Kissimmee is the city south of Walt Disney World, and US-192 (Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway) is its tourist spine. From Old Town on 192, the Magic Kingdom parking area is 12 to 20 minutes away at 8 a.m. Universal is 22 to 40 minutes up I-4, which is the main reason this is a Disney base, not a split one.
What Kissimmee does best is space: vacation homes and multi-bedroom resorts for groups, plus big-ticket resorts such as Gaylord Palms. What it does worst is walking. You will drive to dinner, to the parks and to the supermarket.

How the area is laid out
West 192, closest to Disney, is the busy stretch: hotels, vacation-home communities, dinner shows and Old Town. Osceola Parkway runs parallel to the north and is the quicker road into Disney from Gaylord Palms. Historic downtown Kissimmee is further east, away from the park traffic. Celebration, the planned community Disney developed, sits on the Disney side of I-4 and is quieter than 192.

Drive times to the parks
Google Maps estimates for a Tuesday 8 a.m. departure (October 13, 2026), in typical traffic, to the parking areas:

Add $35 a day for standard parking at Disney or Universal, both tax included. For Magic Kingdom you still ride the monorail or ferry from the lot. The upper end of the Universal range is I-4 doing what I-4 does; leave early.
Transport without a car
Honestly, there is little. Disney's buses, monorail and Skyliner serve Disney's own hotels only. The I-Ride Trolley stays on International Drive. SunRail commuter trains stop at Kissimmee/Amtrak, but trains run Monday to Friday only, and SunRail does not go to any theme park. A one-zone ticket is $2; each extra county adds $1.
Some hotels and vacation-home resorts run shuttles to Disney, often with a fee or a limited timetable. Ask before booking, and price rideshare for the rest. For most families here, the rental car is not optional; see do you need a rental car.
At night: Old Town's car cruises
Old Town is an 18-acre open-air district on West 192 with more than 70 shops, restaurants, rides and bars, and it is free to walk in. The reason to go is the weekend car show:
- Friday: Muscle Car Show and Cruise, cars from 3 p.m., cruise kick-off 8:30 p.m.
- Saturday: Classic Car Show and Cruise, running for nearly 35 years, with up to 250 cars.
Parking is free Monday to Thursday. On weekends the large lot off Florida Plaza Boulevard is paid, cash only. Beyond Old Town, 192 at night is chain restaurants and gas stations; Disney Springs is the better evening if you have a car.
Gaylord Palms runs its own evening program in the holidays: Christmas at Gaylord Palms runs November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with ICE! featuring The Polar Express as a separately ticketed attraction.
Price level
Kissimmee has the widest range of any area here. We did not survey 192's chain motels or vacation-home listings for this page, and vacation-home prices depend on cleaning fees and minimum stays as much as the nightly rate. What we did check, one night, two adults, on Marriott's site:
- Gaylord Palms: from $404 a night on December 8, 2026 and $584 on November 17, each including a $45 resort fee, before tax. Self-parking adds $40 a night plus tax.
Compare that with Disney's Pop Century at $275 to $318 on December 8, with free parking, Skyliner access and early entry. At Gaylord Palms the resort fee and self-parking alone come to $85 a night before tax, and a Disney day adds another $35 for the park lot. Kissimmee wins on space per dollar, not always on the total, so do the sum for your own dates.
Who should stay in Kissimmee
Stay here if you are a group that wants a house with a pool, you are driving anyway, and your days are mostly Disney. Stay elsewhere if Universal is part of the plan, if you do not want to drive, or if you want to walk to dinner: International Drive and Lake Buena Vista both beat 192 on that.

From Old Town on West 192 it is 7.2 to 7.9 miles to the Magic Kingdom parking area, 12 to 20 minutes at 8 a.m. on a weekday per Google Maps. Gaylord Palms is 8 to 12 minutes away.
How far is Kissimmee from Universal?
About 11.7 miles from Old Town via I-4, 22 to 40 minutes at 8 a.m. That range is why Kissimmee is a weak base for Universal days.
Is Old Town Kissimmee free?
Yes, entry is free, and so is the car show. Rides and food cost extra. Parking is free Monday to Thursday; the large lot charges cash on weekends.
Can you get around Kissimmee without a car?
Barely. SunRail stops at Kissimmee/Amtrak on weekdays only and does not reach the parks. Disney's transport is for Disney hotel guests. Plan on a car or rideshare.
Is Kissimmee cheaper than staying at Disney?
Often per room, not always per trip. Add $35 a day for Disney parking and any hotel parking or resort fees before you compare with a Disney value hotel.
