Airboat rides near Orlando

Boggy Creek is the big, polished option, open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a small gator pond and a barbecue restaurant on site. Wild Florida is further out and pairs the airboat with an alligator park and a drive-through safari; it is closed Sundays. Spirit of the Swamp uses six-seat boats, so the ride feels closer to a private charter at a public price.

Boggy Creek describes its tours as the headwaters of the Everglades. Wild Florida uses "Central Florida Everglades." Both phrases describe real geography: this chain of lakes and marshes feeds the system that ends in Florida Bay. Neither is Everglades National Park.

The park's nearest entrance, Shark Valley on US 41 west of Miami, is about 245 miles from Orlando. The Homestead entrance is about 267 miles. That is a four-hour drive each way, which makes a same-day park visit from Orlando a poor idea. If you want sawgrass prairie, mangroves and the national park, plan it from Miami.

What you get near Orlando is lake shoreline, cattails, cypress stands and plenty of alligators. For most visitors, that is the point.

Pick the hour. A half-hour ride spends much of its time getting out of the marina and back. Wild Florida says its half-hour route stays on the perimeter of its own wetlands, while the hour goes into what it calls 100,000 acres of swamp, marsh and river. At Boggy Creek the hour costs about $20 more than the half hour, which buys twice the time on the water.

Boats hit speeds of up to 45 mph in open water, according to Boggy Creek, then slow right down near the reeds where the animals are. Boggy Creek has no minimum age or height. Children under 6 wear a life vest, and under-2s ride on a lap.

Boggy Creek's night tour costs $67 to $79 and uses lights to pick out alligator eye-shine along the shoreline. Wild Florida sells a private evening hour at $85 per person with a four-person minimum. Both operators say wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

A night ride is the better choice in summer, when midday on an open boat is punishing. It is also the one that impresses teenagers who have seen a hundred gators in the theme parks.

Boggy Creek is roughly 25 miles from Disney Springs, about 45 minutes by car. Spirit of the Swamp is closer, around 25 minutes. Wild Florida is about an hour. None is realistic without a car or a rideshare.

Pair a morning ride with Old Town Kissimmee or a lakeside lunch, or with Gatorland on Orange Blossom Trail if the group wants more alligators at closer range. If you are building a day away from the parks, see Orlando without theme parks. Try gator bites afterwards if you are curious.
