Boiled peanuts
Boiled peanuts are peanuts cooked in their shells in heavily salted water for hours, until the nut inside turns soft, like a cooked bean. They are eaten warm and wet: you crack the shell with your teeth, slurp the brine, and eat the nut. The taste is salty and earthy, closer to a legume than to a snack nut.
They are a roadside snack across the American South, sold from stands and gas stations in paper cups or bags. Around Disney World, the easy place to try them is Port Orleans, where two resort pool bars sell Hot Cajun Boiled Peanuts for $5.99.

Where they come from
Boiling peanuts dates back at least to the 19th century in the South. The practice was most likely brought by enslaved people from West Africa. The first published recipe appeared in 1899, by Almeda Lambert. In the early 20th century, boiled peanuts became a mainstream commodity across the lower South.
On May 1, 2006, South Carolina made boiled peanuts its official snack food. In Central Florida you find them the same way as elsewhere in the South: at stands and stores on rural roads outside the city.
Green, raw or Cajun
- Green peanuts are freshly harvested and undried. They must be refrigerated, and they make the best boiled peanuts. The crop comes in during July and August, which is when roadside stands have them fresh.
- Raw peanuts are mature, dried peanuts. They work, but need an overnight soak before boiling.
- Cajun boiled peanuts are boiled with a spice mix such as Old Bay or Zatarain's. Disney sells a hot Cajun version.
Canned boiled peanuts exist too. Fine for curiosity, but a warm cup from a stand is the fair first impression.
Where to find them near Orlando
Disney's Port Orleans resorts: Muddy Rivers, the pool bar at Port Orleans Riverside, and Mardi Grogs at Port Orleans French Quarter both list Hot Cajun Boiled Peanuts at $5.99. Both bars list hours of 11 a.m.–10 p.m. These are pool bars meant for resort guests, so it is a snack for people staying there or visiting by boat from Disney Springs, not a destination in itself.
Roadside stands: Look for hand-painted "boiled peanuts" signs on two-lane roads outside the city, especially in summer. Prices and locations change too often for us to list them, and we could not confirm any fixed stand online.
We found no boiled peanuts on current menus inside the Disney theme parks. If you are building a list of Florida foods, pair them with gator bites at Gatorland and a slice of key lime pie.
How to eat them
- Pick one up and squeeze or bite the seam of the shell.
- Suck out the brine. That salty liquid is half the point.
- Eat the soft nuts and discard the shell. Have a second cup or bag for shells.
Eat them warm, and have water on hand: they are very salty.
Frequently asked questions
What do boiled peanuts taste like?
Salty and earthy, with a soft texture like a cooked bean or a chickpea. They taste nothing like roasted peanuts.
Where can I get boiled peanuts at Disney World?
Muddy Rivers at Port Orleans Riverside and Mardi Grogs at Port Orleans French Quarter list Hot Cajun Boiled Peanuts at $5.99. We found none on menus inside the theme parks in September 2026.
Are boiled peanuts seasonal?
The best ones are. Green peanuts peak in July and August, when the crop comes in. Outside that window, sellers use dried raw peanuts or canned ones.
What are Cajun boiled peanuts?
Boiled peanuts cooked with a spice mix such as Old Bay or Zatarain's, which gives them some heat.
Do you eat the shell of a boiled peanut?
No. You crack the soft shell, drink the brine, eat the nuts inside and throw the shell away.
